Fulham secured the services of Greece international Konstantinos Mitroglou in one of the Premier League's biggest deadline day moves.
Mitroglou signed a four-and-a-half-year deal after Olympiacos accepted an undisclosed bid, while Fulham were also able to secure the services of Everton defender John Heitinga on a free transfer and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lewis Holtby on loan until the end of the season.
In addition, head coach Rene Meulensteen brought in two young midfielders, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Larnell Cole, from Manchester United, with both signing deals until the summer of 2017.
There were also a number of departures at Craven Cottage, with Dimitar Berbatov joining Monaco on loan, Philippe Senderos completing a permanent move to Valencia and Aaron Hughes moving to Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers after being released.
Chelsea signed Saint-Etienne's 19-year-old defender Kurt Zouma for an undisclosed fee on a five-and-a-half-year deal, before loaning him back to the Ligue 1 club on loan until the end of the season, while Gael Kakuta joined Lazio, also on loan, until the end of the current campaign.
Arsenal made use of the loan market to bring in Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom from Spartak Moscow on a temporary basis until the end of the campaign, and young Ghanaian Emmanuel Frimpong departed for Barnsley for an undisclosed fee after struggling for regular game time at the Emirates.
Crystal Palace were very active, bringing in the quintet of Tom Ince, Joe Ledley, Scott Dann, former loanee Jason Puncheon and Wayne Hennessey as Tony Pulis looked to bolster his squad in their fight for survival.
Ince arrived on loan from Championship side Blackpool, while the remaining quartet signed permanent deals from Celtic, Blackburn Rovers, Southampton and Wolves respectively. Stephen Dobbie moved in the opposite direction to Ince, rejoining former club Blackpool on loan.
Southampton's record signing Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, currently under suspension at the club following a training-ground incident, has joined Serie A leaders Juventus on loan for the remainder of the campaign, while Napoli midfielder Pablo Armero has moved to West Ham on a similar deal as Sam Allardyce's men look to stave off relegation.
Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer raided former club Manchester United for Wilfried Zaha and Fabio Da Silva, the former signing on loan until the end of the season and Brazilian full-back Fabio coming in on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee.
Andreas Cornelius, meanwhile, returned to former club Copenhagen, ending his short stay at Cardiff.
Marvin Emnes moved back to Swansea City on loan from Middlesbrough, with Danny Graham arriving from Sunderland, having ended his loan at Hull City, to fill the void left by the Dutchman.
Striker Thievy Bifouma joined West Brom on loan until the end of the season, whilst Brighton and Hove Albion's Liam Bridcutt signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Sunderland after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.
Nottingham Forest secured the services of Hull City defender Jack Hobbs on a permanent basis, while Queens Park Rangers signed two players on loan from top-flight clubs, Modibo Maiga and Will Keane arriving from West Ham and Manchester United respectively.
Razvan Rat was released by West Ham, while Arsenal's Park Chu-Young moved to Watford on loan.
Everton secured the services of 17-year-old goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek from Sparta Prague; Swansea City completed the signing of Falkirk midfielder Jay Fulton and Sunderland winger David Moberg Karlsson joined Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock on loan until the end of the season.
Manchester United let four other youngsters move out on loan to Championship sides, with goalkeeper Sam Johnstone moving to Doncaster Rovers on a four-week loan, defenders Tom Thorpe and Tyler Blackett joining Birmingham City until the end of the season, and Welsh striker Tom Lawrence signing for Yeovil Town on a three-month youth loan.
