Australia wrap up ODI series victory

Australia clinched the one-day international series against England by moving into an unassailable 3-0 lead in Sydney on Sunday. The visitors, having already surrendered the Ashes in a 5-0 whitewash, saw their tour go from bad to worse as the hosts comfortably overhauled their total of 243 with seven wickets in hand and 10 overs to spare. David Warner (71) and Shaun Marsh (71 not out) were the driving forces for Australia, as they inspired Michael Clarke's side to another success that renders the final ODIs in Perth and Adelaide dead rubbers. England got off to a reasonable start with the bat after winning the toss, with captain Alastair Cook given a reprieve by an umpire review having been given out lbw before fellow opener Ian Bell brought up the 50 partnership. However, in the ninth over, Cook (35) was caught by Glenn Maxwell at cover off the bowling of Nathan Coulter-Nile (3-47), before Bell was run out on 29 thanks to a stunning throw from Warner. Ben Stokes was then dismissed by Xavier Doherty for just 15 off 45 balls, before Gary Ballance (26) and Eoin Morgan (54) offered some resistance. But Jos Buttler (four) and Stuart Broad (one) were unable to build on the momentum built up by their team-mates - both falling cheaply in the 44th over. Tim Bresnan (41 not out) and James Tredwell (two not out) looked to have kept the contest alive, as the former moved England to 243 with 13 runs from the final over, only for Australia openers Aaron Finch (22) and Warner to get the hosts off to a positive start. When the latter was caught by Bell at extra cover off the bowling off Stokes (1-23), Australia were 121-2, with Marsh and Clarke (34) then adding 105 between them. Clarke's dismissal off the bowling of Ravi Bopara (1-16) in the 29th over proved to be the final wicket of the match, though, as Brad Haddin continued his superb form with a quickfire 37 not out off 33 balls Marsh added 10 in the final over to get Australia to 244-3 with 60 balls remaining.
