High-flying Ducks edge Red Wings

The Anaheim Ducks strengthened their claims as the NHL's best team after a 1-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Andrew Cogliano tapped in the only goal of the game midway through the second period with Ducks' goaltender Jonas Hiller putting in a superb performance to blank the Red Wings. The win for Anaheim moves them five points clear of the NHL's next best side – the Chicago Blackhawks. The New York Islanders, inspired by Kyle Okposo, overhauled a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 at the Dallas Stars. After going behind to first-period goals from Ray Whitney and Sergei Gonchar, the Islanders struck back through Okposo in the second period to get back into the match. Okposo scored again with little over four minutes to play in the third period to tie the scores before John Tavares and Brock Nelson stunned the Stars with two late goals to secure victory for the Islanders. Cody Hodgson hit the shootout winner as the Buffalo Sabres won 2-1 against the Washington Capitals. Washington secured a lead in the first period through Jason Chimera but Tyler Ennis equalised for the Sabres with a power-play goal before the first interval. After scoreless second and third periods, Hodgson scored the decisive goal for the Sabres in the shootout to ensure victory. In other matches, the Toronto Maple Leafs won 3-2 in a shootout with the New Jersey Devils while the New York Rangers cruised past the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1. The Chicago Blackhawks outlasted the Edmonton Oilers 5-3 and the Minnesota Wild routed the Nashville Predators 4-0.
