Louis Oosthuizen, Joost Luiten and Tommy Fleetwood share the Volvo Golf Champions lead heading into the weekend in Durban.
Oosthuizen ended day one a shot adrift of leader Raphael Jacquelin, but while the Frenchman's form evaded him on Friday, the South African kept up his impressive performance, posting four birdies on his way to a three-under-par round.
The 31-year-old got off to a solid start, before producing a faultless back nine to leave him on seven-under par for the tournament, tied with Luiten and Fleetwood, who both hit scores of five under to post the best rounds of the day.
"It (confidence) is good," Oosthuizen said. "I just need to be a bit more aggressive on the greens, on the longer putts.
"I’m leaving them short. But he way I struck the ball today, to shoot that round, I'm confident in tomorrow to try to make a few more birdies."
Luiten's round of 67 featured the first Albatross of the Dutchman's career and the first by any player in the 2014 Race to Dubai, holing a 248-yard attempt on the 10th.
"Yes, (it was) my first albatross," he said. "I hit a four iron and basically went straight at it, just pitched exactly where I wanted, just front of the green, and then hopefully releases up the slope and that's what it did.
"It went straight at the pin and it went in so, yes, it was a good feeling. I am seven under for the tournament, and in a great position for the weekend."
Englishman Fleetwood, meanwhile, made light of his status as world number 118 by holding his own with Oosthuizen and Luiten at the top of the leaderboard, dropping just one shot.
France's Victor Dubuisson is a further shot back, while Matteo Manassero of Italy replicated Luiten and Fleetwood by producing a round of 67 to climb to fifth.
Elsewhere, Padraig Harrington was forced to call on the services of Irish holidaymaker Pat Cashman as a stand-in caddy when his regular right-hand man Ronan Flood was taken ill on the sixth hole.
"Thankfully there was a friend of ours out there who holidays down here and he took over," Harrington said. "He started off like he was carrying bows and arrows but by the end he had the double-strap going (on the bag) and was using all the lingo."
