Pennetta, Li set up quarter-final clash in Melbourne

Flavia Pennetta advanced to the Australian Open quarter-finals on Sunday, ousting ninth seed Angelique Kerber. For 28th seed Pennetta, her upset of Kerber mixed the fantastic with moments of flatlining. Yet the Italian survived the heart-stopping moments - including tightening up completely while serving for the match and gift a break back to Kerber - to eventually win 6-1 4-6 7-5 in one hour and 52 minutes. Pennetta stormed through the first set in just 24 minutes with unstoppable tennis. But Kerber fought back into some rhythm, saving the fourth game of the second set and eventually squaring things at a set apiece. Then in an intriguing third set, momentum shifted throughout. Kerber broke Pennetta in the third game, before the German then had a dire service game straight afterwards to hand a break back. Pennetta broke to go 5-3 up, then completely fell apart on her next service game. Eventually Kerber made two errors on her service game for Pennetta to win, and set up a quarter-final showdown with the red-hot Li Na - who thrashed Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 6-0. Australian Casey Dellacqua saw her dream run at the competition ended by Eugenie Bouchard, with the Canadian winning 12 of the final 14 games to progress 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-0. Victory would have meant a maiden grand slam quarter-final place for Dellacqua but instead Bouchard progresses to the final eight of a major for the first time in five attempts.
